Dental labs, like Mabel Dental Lab, use impressions to create products such as crowns, dentures, and more. An impression is necessary to create a finished product that will fit properly. Here is more information to help you take an accurate impression to send to our dental lab:

Taking Physical Impressions

When taking physical impressions, a patient should visit a local dental office to have a professional handle the process accurately. A dental professional will make sure that your teeth are free from food or plaque particles before placing the impression material into a tray and then putting the tray in your mouth. The tray should be firmly seated in the mouth to help spread the impression material and avoid shifting.

Once the impression material has hardened, the dental professional will carefully remove the tray. They will repeat this process on the upper and lower jaw. Lift your tongue out of the way when you are getting an impression on your lower jaw. Breathing through your nose during this process may help individuals who have a strong gag reflex. The final restoration’s accuracy depends on the dental professional’s attention to detail when taking the impression.

Taking Digital Impressions

Depending on the dental office, you may be able to have a digital impression instead of a physical one. The office will follow the same initial steps, carefully cleaning your teeth and using air or cotton rolls to reduce moisture. Excess moisture on the surface of your teeth will cause distortions in the scan.

Offices will use machines like iTero, CEREC, or Carestream to submit the digital impression to the dental lab. Your dental provider will carefully scan your teeth and then send the file to the dental lab. Mabel Dental Lab accepts a variety of scan types to enhance patient convenience. Digital scans often allow for faster product turnaround times, and they can reduce the risk of patient discomfort or gagging often associated with traditional impressions.

Starting a Case

Mabel Dental Lab strives to make the process of sending a case to our lab as simple as possible. Here are the steps involved in sending your physical impression:

Complete the Rx

The Rx is a prescription detailing exactly what product is needed. We offer various Rx types, including a universal Rx, fixed Rx, implant Rx, and more. When requesting crowns, the Rx will require you to write information like the desired material and shade and whether the case is an implant. Our materials for fixed restorations include emax, zirconia, and PFM’s, among others. If you are using a removable Rx, explain if the case is for a denture, partial, nightguard, or another product. Make sure you fill out the prescriptions in their entirety to avoid delays due to missing information.

Package the Case

While it is not required for digital cases, if you are sending a physical impression, you will need to carefully package the impression, models, and prescription. Add foam padding to the impression when shipping, as this will prevent it from becoming squished or distorted. We offer bubble wrap, boxes, and plastic bags for our customers to use when sending cases. You can send one or multiple cases in the same box for convenience — our team will verify that the impressions match the correct prescriptions when they arrive.

Ship the Box

Once everything has been packaged securely, procure a shipping label for your case. Mabel Dental offers prepaid labels for our Smile Partners to simplify the shipping process. We work with both UPS and Mercury Service to send cases, and we charge a rate of nine dollars per box, (UPS) so to help you save money, we recommend sending multiple cases in the same box. To schedule a pickup with our courier, you can call, email us, or reach out to the courier directly. There is no pick-up charge except for UPS (you pay for the pickup + shipping in most situations).

Receive the Finished Product

Our lab works to provide quick and efficient turnaround times for our Smile Partners. Explore our page to learn more about the turnaround times we offer for standard crowns, removables, and aligners. If you have a rush case, be sure to let us know, and we will do our best to accommodate your request. We also want to make sure you are always updated, so we inform our Smile Partners when we have received the case and when we have shipped the finished product back to you via our online portal, DDX. You can find the UPS tracking number so you can always stay apprised of your case’s location.
