Full and partial dentures offer a solution for patients missing some or all of their teeth. Mabel Dental offers high-quality denture products customized in color and shape to meet your patient’s goals and aesthetic preferences. Here is more information about the process of fitting your patients with dentures:
Initial Consultation
During the initial consultation, determine if your patient is eligible for full or partial dentures. Gum disease or tooth decay may lead to patients losing several or all of their teeth. Patients can also lose teeth due to trauma to the mouth. Dentures offer a quick solution, helping to restore their smile and ability to chew.
Dentures may lead to sores or other issues if a patient has excessive gum disease. The patient should seek treatment for their gum disease before proceeding with the denture process to get a comfortable fit. When recommending a partial denture, verify that the surrounding teeth are healthy and able to support the partial. If necessary, extract some of the patient’s teeth if they are unsalvagable. These pre-treatment steps help to provide a comfortable denture fit for the patient.
Physical Impressions
Physical impressions involve placing a putty-like material into the patient’s mouth. The material will slowly harden, forming a replica of the patient’s teeth that our dental lab will use. Before inserting the tray with the impression material, verify that the patient’s mouth is clean and that no food particles are caught between their teeth.
Plaque and food buildup can cause the impression to be distorted, resulting in an improper fit for the denture. Dentists also need to verify that there are no bubbles or warping. Once the material has set for several minutes, carefully remove the impression tray without bumping it against the other teeth.
Digital Impressions
If your dental office has an iTero, CEREC, or Carestream machine, you can send your digital impressions to Mabel Dental. Digital impressions are an easy alternative for offices that do not want to store impression trays and materials. Carefully clean and dry the patient’s teeth before scanning their mouth. Since scans eliminate the need for mail-in impressions, they get to the dental lab more quickly, speeding up turnaround times.
Product Selection
Once you have determined if a partial or full denture is a suitable solution for your patient, fill out the Rx provided by Mabel Dental and select the product specifications. The Rx outlines the materials, colors, and shapes you want for the specific product. Here is more information about our partials and their benefits:
Metal Partials
Metal partials come in three different frame types: SLM, titanium, and Dentsply Vitallium® 2000. SLM frames are beneficial when a patient desires a fast seating time. A precise laser creates the frame, leading to a more accurate fit. A titanium frame offers a lightweight option, and due to its biocompatibility, the metal will not react poorly or corrode when exposed to body fluids. Dentsply Vitallium® 2000 frames offer high durability and are designed to withstand heavy chewing without warping or breaking.
Flexible Partials
Flexible partials offer a comfortable solution for tooth loss. We can create the thermoplastic to match the patient’s gum color, providing a natural look. The material is also designed to withstand staining, reducing patient maintenance requirements. The thermoplastic material can also be combined with a metal framework for increased durability.
VisiClear® Framework
Our VisiClear® frameworks are translucent, helping to blend with the surrounding gums. Due to bacteria buildup, some partial designs can accumulate foul odors or stains. This material will resist bacterial growth, leading to a cleaner mouth.
DurAcetal® Framework & Clasps
DurAcetal® frameworks are also made from a durable, stain-resistant thermoplastic. Some patients may prefer to avoid metal partials, and this material offers a metal-free solution. The DurAcetal® clasps are designed to snap onto the patient’s teeth, offering a comfortable, secure fit.
Product Insertion
Once our lab has shipped the final partial or full denture to your office, schedule an insertion appointment with your patient. During this appointment, place the denture or partial in the patient’s mouth to verify that it fits properly. Check to make sure it aligns with the surrounding teeth and gums and that the color matches as closely as possible. The shape of the teeth should also match the patient’s natural teeth if you insert a partial. If the tooth shape is too square or round, you can have it adjusted for a more precise match.
Have the patient bite down several times to verify they will be able to chew and speak comfortably. Reach out to our technicians with any questions regarding the fit and design of your product. Checking the aesthetics and comfort of the denture will contribute to a more seamless transition for the patient, improving their experience with your office.
